1 Mistral Avenue

The house was originally designed and built by Petit and Sevitt, a leader in 1960s project homes. The internal spaces had been designed to the minimum, and were in need of expansion. The positives were that the skillion form of the existing house captured natural light and ventilation.

When embarking on the project we set out to enhance the building by relocating the existing garage (north of the building and in conflict with the existing Blue Gum) to the front of Mistral Avenue in the south-west corner where it acts as a windbreaker.

We added a ground floor extension to the living rooms by inserting a butterfly roof and a new balcony opening out to the northern garden with an access deck around the perimeter of the dwelling.

The second extension was to add a ‘breezeway’ to the first floor which captures light, sea breezes and water glimpses.

We modified the existing roof by removing the tiles and shaping the existing rafters to be lighter, tapering out the edges to facilitate new custom orb roof sheeting with new insulation.
