15 Carrington Avenue
Harston House, a distinctive Queen Anne style Federation bungalow, built around 1898, is nestled above Quakers Hat Bay and retains notable elements of the original fabric including the ornate wrap-around verandah, portico entry, stained glass windows and marble fireplaces. From the late 1980’s the house has been progressively restored and extended.
The architectural brief was to provide light filled interiors, extend the kitchen, bedroom space and service rooms, incorporate rainwater tanks and reconnect the house to the harbour via a grand garden stair, terraces, boatshed and decking. New work was sensitively considered due to the heritage significance.
The kitchen with its distinctive turret roof was extended; at the street side a garage and guest wing has been added to replace the carport/ancillary structure. Extensive garden works, stairs to the foreshore and a new boatshed were completed, restoring Harston House back to its glory within a splendid garden setting.
The new additions sit comfortably with the old and the significant heritage elements of this house have been retained.
