754 Military Road
The primary objective of the design was to enhance the heritage values of the Conservation Area by the restoration of the original portion of the Federation building fronting Military Road.
The visibility and prominence of the new development is diminished by its location to the rear of the site and the proximity of adjacent development on both the north and south sides. An existing row of mature trees further increases the screening effect from Military Road.
The finishes of the new facades are neutral in character and do not impact on the original building or the Conservation area.
The composition of the elevations responds to the existing proportions and configuration of original window openings.
The scale of the proposal does not detract from the streetscape as the height is within the existing ridge line. The form and bulk of the extension is obscured by original side walls and an intact tiled roof with gables facing north and south.
The separation between the new section and original building is expressed by a 700mm wide x 300mm deep slot to the full height of the north and south facades, which assists in maintaining the integrity of the original building.
